Dalam peta kuratorial yang kami ajukan, Dracom melalui The Ego and His Loss memantik sebuah pertanyaan yang mengusik: bagaimana tatapan dibentuk untuk menemukan diri yang berada di dalam, sekaligus diri yang terikat pada konstelasi sosial?
Berangkat dari sebuah berita di Jepang yang memperlihatkan tegangan horizontal antara mereka yang dianggap “masyarakat asli” dan para pendatang, karya ini melampaui pembacaan atas perbedaan yang ditebalkan oleh peta-peta yang kasatmata. Sebaliknya, ia membongkar kepahitan yang berakar pada hal-hal yang tak terlihat — struktur, bahasa, dan cara pandang yang secara perlahan membentuk relasi antarmanusia.
Persoalan politik identitas dihadirkan bukan melalui pernyataan yang lantang, melainkan melalui keheningan dan perlambatan yang mengajak kita menyadari teror teks — baik dalam ragam dialek bahasa maupun citra visual — yang terus mengonstruksi cara kita memahami realitas. Di tengah arus informasi yang bergerak semakin cepat dan tunduk pada logika algoritmik, karya ini mempertanyakan kembali bagaimana persepsi dibentuk, diarahkan, serta memungkinkan percakapan tentang cara kita memandang diri sendiri maupun orang lain.
Within the curatorial framework we propose, The Ego and His Loss by Dracom begins with a disquieting question: how is our gaze conditioned to recognise the self within, while simultaneously locating that self within a broader social constellation?
Taking as its point of departure a news story from Japan that exposed the tensions between those regarded as "native" and those perceived as outsiders, the work moves beyond identity as a visible marker of difference. Instead, it traces the more elusive forces through which estrangement takes shape: the structures, languages, and habits of perception that quietly organise human relations long before they become explicit acts of exclusion.
Rather than approaching identity politics through declaration or confrontation, The Ego and His Loss operates through restraint, silence, and temporal suspension. It draws attention to the authority of text—in spoken dialects as much as visual images—and to the subtle ways these systems mediate our experience of reality. At a moment when perception is increasingly accelerated and calibrated by algorithmic logics, the work asks how ways of seeing are produced, circulated, and naturalised. In doing so, it opens a space to reconsider not only how we perceive others, but also how our understanding of ourselves is continually shaped through those very acts of looking.
