About the event
‘Plunge’ traces the intertwined experiences of Isabel, a Singaporean news anchor, and Ina, a Chinese-Indonesian student in Jakarta, Indonesia whose lives are affected by the same event: the 1998 crisis and riots. As peaceful demonstrations escalate into riots, the two women must navigate both the emotional and political impact of the incident.
Originally written by Singaporean playwright Jean Tay and translated into Indonesian by Muhammad Abe for the 2019 Asia Playwrights Meeting in Yogyakarta, this staging by Teater Tetas marks an encounter between Indonesian theater and Southeast Asian text—an opening performance that sets the tone for cross-regional dialogue and reflection.
